A boat receipt is a written record proving a transaction occurred between the seller and buyer of a boat or other vessel. It contains essential information about the ship, the buyer, and the seller. This receipt doesn’t act as proof of ownership but can be used for tax purposes if applicable to the seller or buyer. This receipt can apply to all of the following watercraft:

  • Canoes;
  • Catamarans;
  • Kayaks;
  • Jet skis;
  • Motor/powerboats;
  • Rowboats;
  • Sailboats;
  • Skiffs;
  • Tugboats; and
  • Yachts.

What to Include

  • Buyer information (name, address, phone, email);
  • Hull Identification Number (HIN);
  • Odometer reading (hours);
  • Payment method (cash, check, credit card, other);
  • Receipt number;
  • Seller information (name, address, phone, email);
  • Signatures of both parties;
  • Summary of charges:
    • Cost of the vessel,
    • Cost of add-ons (if applicable),
    • Subtotal,
    • Tax rate,
    • Total taxes due,
    • Total amount due,
    • Amount paid, and
    • Outstanding balance (if applicable);
  • Title number;
  • Transaction date; and
  • Vessel description (make, model, year, color, condition, and additions such as outboard motors and trailers).
