A United Way donation receipt is the written record of a donation made to the United Way charitable organization. It includes the donation amount or physical description, if applicable, as well as the donation date and the donor’s contact information. It can also include identifying information about the United Way so the donor can claim a tax deduction on their tax return with the IRS.

What is United Way?

United Way is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that invests in solutions to improve education, financial stability, and health worldwide. It was founded in 1887 by a priest, a rabbi, two ministers, and a woman. The organization works with nonprofit, private, and public partners to enhance economic development, educational tools, and health resources.

United Way has a presence in over 1,100 communities (95% of U.S. communities) across thirty-seven (37) countries and territories. It boasts 6.8 million donors, 45,000 corporate partners, and 1.5 million volunteers. Forbes named it the Number One Charity in America for 2021.

How to Donate (3 Steps)

Step 1: Amount

Visit United Way’s online donation portal. Choose whether the contribution will support the U.S. United Way, an International United Way, or wherever the help is needed most. Then select or enter the donation amount and choose whether to pay with a credit card or PayPal. For this explanation, we’ll use a credit card.

Step 2: Details

Enter the donor’s full name, email address, and billing address associated with the credit card.

Step 3: Payment

Enter the credit card number and expiration date. Click “Next” to complete the donation.

Other Ways to Donate

Cryptocurrency: All cryptocurrency donations benefit the United Way Worldwide Innovation Fund.

Gift Planning: United Way accepts bequests and IRA charitable rollover contributions.

International Donor Advised Giving Program (IDAG); IDAG contributions allow donors to make tax-deductible donations to charitable entities outside the United States.

United Way provides the following services to IDAG donors:

  • Access to United Way’s network in forty (40) countries;
  • Anti-terrorism vetting;
  • Due diligence;
  • Equivalency determination;
  • Expenditure responsibility;
  • Experienced, multi-lingual program officer;
  • General charitable operations grants;
  • Outputs and outcomes-based reporting;
  • Simple fee structure;
  • Specific project grants;

International Support Fund: The ISF allows donors to make contributions of less than $5,000 to a specific member organization of United Way or a geographic area where United Way is present. Donors request the particular organization or location when they contribute.

Securities must be donated directly to United Way or United Way Worldwide. Donors contact United Way to get the name of its brokerage firm, the firm’s DTC number, and account’s name and number, and the broker’s name and phone number. Then they entrust their own broker to initiate a “broker to broker” transfer.

Students



Over 1,500 high school and college students volunteer in 80 Student United Way chapters worldwide. Their programs focus on education, financial stability, and health. Students can find volunteer opportunities addressing any of the following issues:

  • Child literacy;
  • College prep for high school students;
  • Environmental projects;
  • Financial literacy;
  • Insurance literacy;
  • Supporting the houseless; and
  • Tutoring.

Tocqueville Society



The Tocqueville Society is a community of annual contributors of $10,000 or more. It was founded in 1984 and has chapters in France, Romania, and the United States. Its four (4) primary goals are to:

  • “Change lives through philanthropic leadership focused on the building blocks for a better life: a quality education that leads to a stable job; income that can support a family through retirement, and good health.
  • Communicate the vital role of personal philanthropic action in creating long-lasting changes.
  • Expand high-level personal giving and United Way Major and Planned Giving programs.
  • Strengthen local United Way leadership by building a network of like-minded leaders across the globe.”

United Way LINC (Lead. Impact. Network. Change)



LINC provides networking and volunteer opportunities for young early professionals to help them enhance their communities and resumes simultaneously.

United Way Young Leaders Society



The Young Leaders Society is a network of young international professionals participating in hands-on volunteering, leadership training, and unique networking events. They also participate in planning and executing fundraising events.

Women United



Women United is an international community of over 70,000 women focused on promoting education, financial stability, and good health for women around the world. It has chapters in 165 communities across six (6) countries. One of its main goals is to reduce teen pregnancies. The community has raised $2 billion since 2002.

Workplace Campaigns: Businesses can host events, fundraisers, and volunteer opportunities to strengthen connections between their employees and their communities.

Where Does the Money Go?

211



211 is a health and human services information hotline. It responds to over 20 million requests for help every year. 211 connects callers to a local community resource specialist who can provide resources regarding:

  • A safe, confidential path out of domestic abuse;
  • Addiction prevention;
  • Disaster recovery;
  • Educational opportunities;
  • Emergency information;
  • Employment opportunities;
  • Health epidemic information;
  • Healthcare information;
  • Pandemic information;
  • Re-entry assistance for ex-offenders;
  • Rehabilitation programs;
  • Shelter and housing options;
  • Supplemental food and nutrition programs;
  • Support groups for individuals with mental illnesses or special needs;
  • Utility assistance;
  • Vaccination information; and
  • Veterans services.

Born Learning



Born Learning is an engagement campaign targeted at parents and caregivers. It promotes tools to recognize early learning opportunities in everyday moments.

  • Born Learning Academy: Resources, tips, and tools for families to prepare children for kindergarten (birth to age five (5)).

Center to Combat Human Trafficking



Human trafficking compels a person to work through force, fraud, or coercion, always for little to no pay. The Center to Combat Human Trafficking creates community-specific solutions and utilizes the United Way network to combat human trafficking on the local level. Human trafficking usually manifests in these ways:

  • Bonded labor;
  • Child labor;
  • Domestic servitude;
  • Forced labor;
  • Forced marriage;
  • Sex trafficking; and

Are most commonly found in these industries:

  • Commercial sex;
  • Construction sites;
  • Factories;
  • Farms;
  • Fishing boats;
  • Mines;
  • Prison factories; and
  • Private homes as servants.

Closing the Digital Divide



United Way works with corporate partners, local governments, and school districts to get free Wi-Fi and hardware to the neediest communities. 15% of families with school-aged children don’t have home internet, which causes difficulty completing school assignments in the current digital age.

  • The Internet Essentials program connects low-income Americans to high-speed, low-cost home internet.
  • Lift Zones are Wi-Fi-connected safe spaces at community centers and recreational facilities.

Disaster Recovery Efforts



United Way participates in disaster recovery efforts around the globe in virtually any type of disaster situation where help is needed. The organization actively:

  • Convenes social service providers;
  • Engages local partners;
  • Mobilizes volunteers;
  • Provides food, shelter, and water;
  • Raises funds for affected communities; and
  • Focuses investments on case management, structural repairs, victim health, and other immediate unmet needs.

United Way allows individuals to access nutritious food, quality healthcare, and substance abuse programs.

Mission United



Mission United is a program for veterans. It connects them and their families with resources and services to help them secure civilian employment, healthcare, and housing.

MyFreeTaxes



MyFreeTaxes is a free website that allows U.S. taxpayers to file their federal and state taxes online. United Way partnered with the IRS’s Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program so filers can prepare their returns themselves or get their returns completed for them. The program is available in English and Spanish.

NFL Partnership



United Way and the NFL began a partnership in 1973 to encourage communities to participate in programs promoting healthy minds and bodies. NFL coaches, owners, and players volunteer as mentors, readers, and tutors for children in their local communities. They also participate in public service announcements.

The Character Playbook is a program for middle school students, teachers, and districts. It teaches skills for creating and maintaining healthy relationships, such as conflict resolution, managing emotions, and physical fitness. The program has reached over 1 million students in more than 12,000 schools since 2016.

UWW Innovation Fund



The United Way Worldwide Innovation Fund pushes for new technological approaches and developments attempting to solve the issues it cares most about. The fund functions on the following four (4) strategies:

  • “Equipping Innovators: We train nonprofit leaders and community volunteers in design thinking, lean startup, and other frameworks and techniques that innovation requires.
  • Creating and Scaling Solutions: We seek out the best ideas, host innovation challenges, and support the incubation of promising concepts that could create impact across our worldwide network.
  • Exploring Emerging Tech: We invest time and resources understanding the evolving tech landscape to inspire future-oriented innovations that can support the whole nonprofit sector.
  • Sharing What We Learn: We develop case studies and reports to make sure what’s learned at United Way can inform innovators everywhere.”
